Lesson Title:  Your first strum

Instrument:  Guitar

Content:

Objective: To be able to strum your guitar in common time (4/4 rhythm) 
Instructions: 1.  View the Video - low / high / MPEG
2.  Practice this pattern slowly at first:  
II:  Down/.. - Down/up - ....../up - Down/up :II
3.  Practice strumming with your pic using the chords shown below.
4.  Practice strumming with your thumb using the chords shown below.
5.
  Practice strumming through the pattern 2 x per chord.  
6.  Practice changing your chord fingerings without slowing or stopping the rhythm of your strum.
7.  Practice 20 minutes each day.  Log this time into your practice log.
8.  Go to the next lesson
Practice: Watch the videos a few times.  Use the correct fingerings as shown in the images below.  Practice strumming up and down with your pic.  Attempt to get clear, full sounds from each string.  Make sure your fingers only touch the strings that they are supposed to.  If your strings are "muffled sounding" then you are not pressing down hard enough or your fingers are touching the strings next to them.  Practice picking each string separately, up and down, slowly at first, then gradually building speed.
